Since the 1700s, the Holeman family have raised their children and made a living on this 40 acre farm. Today, Charles and Joan Holeman grow greenhouse and field tomatoes, cucumbers, and other vegetables as well as strawberries, cut flowers and a variety of live plants including ferns, bougainvilleas, bedding plants, pansies, and mums. Growing Practices - Greenhouse tomatoes are grown pesticide-free with bumblebees for pollination and other beneficial insects for pest control. Greenhouses are heated with a hot water system using recycled wood for heat. All field production is on raised plastic covered beds with drip irrigation. Cover crops follow all crops, which are on a three year rotation. When pests become a significant problem, softer controls (organic, fungus, and bacteria) are used first and approved chemicals are a last resort. Website |

Full Plate Farm is located on 19 acres of land near the base of Bass Mountain (of the Cane Creek Mountain range) in Alamance County. The market garden is currently 1 acre of annual fruit and vegetable field crops. I began gardening at my in-laws many years ago as a way to ground myself in the midst of graduate studies. After school, I apprenticed for close to a year at a nearby local organic farm before going into social work practice in community-based non-profits. Each season, after work and on the weekends and days off, the garden expanded with ambition (and obsession) until my spouse and I purchased land only a few miles from her in-laws and that original garden. After a couple years of building infrastructure on the property, and two young children later, while working a full-time job with childcare costs and out-of-control student loan debt, Full Plate Farm came to fruition. J'ellen preserves the just-picked flavor of the freshest fruits & vegetables in small batches. I started canning a decade ago, after coming home from a bountiful u-pick strawberry patch in North Carolina with 10 pounds. I set to work teaching myself how to can strawberry jam. Since that first batch, I have branched out and now make 5 flavors of jam—strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry jalapeño, and pear ginger—as well as salsa. I look forward to expanding the repertoire further through customer requests or the bumper crops of friends who find themselves knee-deep in plums or kumquats when the tree in the backyard explodes. J'ellen will be at market with jams, marmalade and salsa. Website Shop J'ellen Online |

Long an admirer of pottery, I began studying ceramics locally at Claymakers Studio in Durham in 2003. I've studied under and been heavily influenced by many potters. In 2007, I established a home studio. Most of my work is wheel thrown using high fire stoneware clay. I am attracted to variations in form and strive for clean lines and designs that spatially fit each pot. All of my functional pots are glazed with food safe glazes, and are dishwasher and microwave safe. Fresh from the kiln to you! Our mission is to sell seafood caught by North Carolina fishermen. Locals Seafood started selling NC shrimp from the back of a truck in 2010. Co-founders and college buddies Lin & Ryan started the business when they noticed the lack of high-quality local seafood available in the Triangle. Today, our team drives to the NC coast 3 to 4 times a week to buy fresh seafood. We bring it back to Raleigh where we cut, pack, and sell it. Lara O’Keefe is a North Carolina Native. She attended Warren Wilson College where she discovered ceramics during her last semester. From that point she took classes at the local Community College before going to apprentice at several different potteries - Mangum Pottery, Jugtown Pottery, and The Hewitt Pottery. She fell in love with wood firing at Jugtown and built her own wood kiln in 2007. O'Keefe credits her time spent at North Carolina- based potteries over the span of almost a decade that provided her with a catalogue of forms to reference and endlessly reinvent. She sees her pots as existing in a continuum of tradition. She hopes that the user of her pots can feel that same connection to the past and hopefully be drawn more into the present moment over a shared cup of tea or meal with a friend or loved one. Prodigal Farm in northern Durham County is one of only two Animal Welfare Approved goat cheese dairies in North Carolina. Kathryn Spann, Dave Krabbe, and their stellar farmhands are slaves to about 250 goats that are never confined to a barn, and get moved to fresh pasture every week. They make their cheeses using only the milk from their own herd. Their family farm is on a 97-acre former tobacco farm, where they use both the pasture and the woods as forage for their goats. Our goats are all pastured on our 97 acre farm. Most goat dairies aren’t pasture-based any more, but our herd gets rotated to fresh forage (which changes with the seasons and includes woodland) weekly. This means our cheese demonstrates true terroir, a taste of place. That place is our family farm, in an area where Kathryn’s family has farmed for 300 years. We also produce delicious goat meat, and prepared foods using items produced on our farm and by other farms in our area. Kathryn is chair of Durham’s Farmland Protection Advisory Board, which seeks to preserve farmland, both by using conservation easements so that the land will never be developed, and by helping farmers find more ways to profit from their efforts. In this world of so many disposable goods, it is important to me to create things of beauty that will be kept, observed, and valued. I believe that jewelry, which originates from a loving and peaceful place, imparts those intentions to the wearer. Cultivating a thoughtful mind and workspace moves even the act of forging a simple hoop earring beyond the trivial. I consider myself both designer and craftsman, taking joy in both the puzzle of discovering new forms, and the daily practice of working with the materials. The techniques I use are those of the traditional bench jeweler, including sawing, forging, stamping, soldering, and fusing. I have been influenced by the design traditions of the of the early 20th century European and American crafts movement, Art Nouveau, Scandinavian design, and the arts and crafts of indigenous and ancient peoples. It is my privilege to have spent the last 15 years drawing on the knowledge of those who have gone before me and expanding on it my own way. I can imagine no other life for myself, and I would hope in my small way to inspire others to cultivate their talents as well. Website Order Directly From Roberta |
