Farmer FoodShare & Plant a Row
Starting May 1st 2010, we began collaborating with Interfaith Food Shuttle to bring Farmer FoodShare & Plant a Row to the market to help combat food insecurity in our area.
Farmer FoodShare
The Farmer FoodShare program is a volunteer and farmer-led program that collects delicious, fresh market fruit and vegetables from farmers and shoppers and with the help of Interfaith Food Shuttle and volunteers distributes it to a network of social services agencies (senior centers, community kitchens, drug recovery centers and food banks) in local under-served communities. Chapel Hill Farmers’ Market since May 2010 has joined with Carrboro Farmers’ Market, Western Wake Farmers’ Market and Durham Farmers’ Market in their awesome efforts to combat food insecurity and ensure that nothing goes to waste, while raising awareness that a sustainable local food economy must include every member of our community. If you are interested in volunteering to help out with Farmer FoodShare at Market and/or deliver food contact Margaret Gifford at margaret@farmerfoodshare.org
How you can help: During market, shoppers can make tax-deductible donations of groceries or cash through the “Buy One, Give One” program. Also, please feel free to bring excess produce from your own home gardens.
Volunteers collect and distribute the generous weekly donations of market-fresh food at the end of each market.
1725 lbs total in 2010! Help us give even more in 2011
