Write a Letter!

Are you a fan of The Chapel Hill Farmers' Market?  Let the "higher-ups" know.  In a world measured on bottom lines and price-tags- these are not always indicative of the community at large.  Support us by writing a letter to the Town of Chapel Hill and University Mall telling your experiences and support.  Or submit a letter to us and we will post it on your behalf!  We thank you each and every market for your support!

Notes from the field...

Before we get to market news and food, I ask you to please take a minute to remember what this weekend holiday is actually about- honoring all of those who have given any part of their lives to serve this country.  Please pause with me (1 second per “period” )

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Thank You.

Now, on to food… first, for your memorial day festivities-  Make this a local celebration and get all your grillins at market!  (in abc order)… Coon Rock, Ever Laughter, Fickle Creek, and T5 have all the cuts you could need!

Secondly, we need to talk seasonal… this may be my soap box platform for the year, but it is sooo important that people start to understand how our food is grown!  A market goer on Tuesday gave out to me that we were out of strawberries.  I tried to explain that it was a bad year for strawberries.  He did not understand.  The sun was shining and the local grocery stores had plenty.  Well folks, it doesn’t work that way.  Yes, the sun has been out a bit… but recall all that rain??

While our crops need water, too much in too little time is not good.  The fields get soggy, farmers can’t get out, and fruits and veggies rot quickly.  I know of many strawberry farmers who had pick-your-own fields open for over a month last year, they had to close in 2 weeks this year.  Too much rain.

BUT… this has the makings for a great blueberry crop!  Those fruits have been soaking up all that rain and warmth and making sweet berries!  I won’t count the pints till they are in… but could be a bumper year.   The agriculture world is contingent on so many factors... lucky for us, our farmers grow a multitude of crops! If you really want to gain some understanding, talk to the farmers- they can tell you the challenges and beneficial flip-sides to the weather.

What other items are in season?  Turnips!  And broccoli!!  We are so used to seeing these staples in the stores year-round, we don’t always associate them with a season.  Especially broccoli.  Well folks, it has one, it is short, and it is here.  Last week I was ecstatic to leave market with a full bag of broccoli.  But also a bit sad.  My personal rule is to not shop till the end of market, so I rarely get the choice goods.  Customers first.  So to have some left was a treat, but also a concern.  Local, fresh broccoli will not last long… you should be buying it up!  To encourage you, my recipe this week is a fantastic simple preparation for this staple, as well as a few ideas from Ever Laughter Farm on how to use the beautiful bountiful turnips that are at market.

Oh gosh... and don't forget the sugar snap peas (they will not be around much longer) and the shiitake mushrooms!  Both have thrived in this weather!  Of course, some summer veggies have started to make thier way into market... the first of the patty-pan squash and zucchini have started to arrive!

So this weekend, make sure to stop and give thanks to those who serve.  And then stop and appreciate the bounty our farmers bring to us… rain or shine… whatever may grow.

See you at Market!

~Lindsay
